My trip to couldn’t be complete without staying at a themed hotel. Sadly the one where you sleep in a giant bowl of ramen was booked up, so Hello Kitty came to rescue! Such a bizarre and fun experience! 🐱 ___________ @liketoknow.it http://liketk.it/2vrZH

I first visited Tokyo a few years ago. This time, I felt like I visited a different place, way easier to travel. All the announcements and signs on public transportation were in English - you no longer had to learn Japanese spelling of the station you need to get off at. There are also English menus at most restaurants, something that back then was almost never available anywhere. I’m not sure if these changes are for the better though, as more tourists can cause more exploitation without regulations. The best example are Owl Cafes. There used to be just one cafe, opened only at night for the sake of owls who were only brought in for 2h and went home after. These days these cafes popped on on every corner and are opened day and night. On three occasions when I was walking on the street I was greeted by people parading owls around in the sun to promote their cafes.... 😟I guess if they didn’t have that many tourists in Japan because it got easier to travel there, this wouldn’t happen? What are your thoughts ? _________ http://liketk.it/2vqtb @liketoknow.it

I didn’t put the exact name and location on my previous photo, because I wanted to encourage some research (instead of going to the same insta spots everywhere) 😉 This place is called Anata No Warehouse and it’s in Kawasaki (takes a while to get there from central Tokyo, but it’s worth it). You need to take a JR train to Kawasaki Station and walk under the highway to get there. You’ll be able to see it easily since even outside it’s the only old looking building in the area. Good luck with claw machines, they’re so fun! 💰🍀

I’m not even sure how I first hear of this warehouse in Tokyo. I wasn’t sure what to expect either, but from the very first moment I entered this place I felt like I stepped into a cyberpunk dystopian city straight out of Blade Runner but weirder. From hallways to the bathrooms, everything is covered in fake filth to make it look like the Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City. But hey, it’s actually a modern day arcade with so many claw machines - you can even fish out some ice cream. I think it was one of the coolest off the path experiences I had in Japan.

I must admit that shooting with these fluffy guys in Nara was my biggest self-photography challenge ever. Since I shoot with a tripod on 10sec timer I normally run in front of the camera after setting it up. It turns out that deer don’t follow my instructions well and come to the tripod, but most of the time ended up staying behind it looking confused when I got in front of the camera. They had looks on their faces: where did I go and where are the deer crackers?😛 After 3 packages of deer cookies and about 30 tries they finally got the hint that they only have 10 seconds to change my their position😉Oh deer... 🦌

It’s no secret that I love cats. So a temple full of ‘maneki-neko’ was surely my favorite temple in Japan. Gotokuji Temple is believed to be the birthplace of this famous beckoning cat, a lucky cat charm for the Japanese.

Fushimi Inari Shrine is totally worth going to when visiting Kyoto, but these vermilion torii gates are stealing the show. The temple itself is actually a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami (spirit) Inari of fertility, rice, tea, sake and foxes, so that’s why you can see statues of foxes everywhere🦊 It was 5:30am when I got there and glad I did, since these trails became busy already an hour later... __________ http://liketk.it/2vics @liketoknow.it

The Moomins are the best! It only took me two attempts and about 2h wait to get into this cafe - it’s always so busy! When I first found out that Americans don’t really know the Moomins I was shocked. They’re based on a book by a Finnish (Swedish speaking) author Tove Jansson and brought to live on TV by the Japanese, hence they’re so popular in Japan. In Europe,l I grew up on them in the 90s and loved them so much!

Bamboo forest was one thing I really wanted to see in Kyoto, but I ended up loving the whole area of Arashiyama and walked around for a while. Plus, I rode a tram through the tunnel of cherry blossom trees there - surely the best ride in town😍

THE best place to see cherry blossoms in Tokyo is without a doubt Chidoriga-Fuchi, where you can rent a rowing boat and float among sakura petals 🌸🌸 Travel tip: Do go at 7-8am to secure your spot, even though it opens at 9am. If you get there later you can expect a few hours long line 😋 _________ http://liketk.it/2vidH @liketoknow.it

While sakura season is very pretty, it’s also insanely busy (what Instagram usually won’t tell you). I could only explore Kyoto between 5am and 9am, because later some places were so crowded that I could barely see anything. What was the most crowded place you’ve ever visited?
